I changed into my favorite lounge pants and an oversized shirt before I made my way down towards where I hoped the kitchen was. After wandering around for a bit, I finally found it and walked towards the fridge.
“You’re up late,” a voice said from behind me.
I froze for a moment and then turned around to see Liam sitting at the counter in nothing but a pair of gray sweatpants. “I didn’t realize anyone would be awake.”
“I didn’t see you at dinner,” he said, cocking his head as he spoke.
“I ate enough at the wedding,” I said and grabbed a yogurt from the fridge. “I just needed a snack.”
“You should come to the meals so I know you’re eating okay,” he said.
I forced a smile and grabbed a fork. “It’s okay, really.” I walked towards the door, but he jumped up and stood between me and the exit.
“You will join me for all meals as part of your contract,” he said, his dark eyes fixed on me.
I sighed and met his gaze. “We don’t have a contract.”
“It’s implied,” he countered. “As my mate, you are expected to be there.”
“Fine,” I said through gritted teeth. This whole marriage thing was getting annoying. One minute he wants to act as though I’m not there and the next he wanted me close for meals or other things.
“Good,” he said simply, but didn’t move.
“Can I go?” I asked, not breaking eye contact.
He smirked, and his hand moved my hair away from my face. “You are a beautiful one.”
I stared at him, slightly shocked that he was complimenting me.
“I should have opened with that when I chose you.”
“I thought this was a marriage to get the power you want from my pack?” I stayed still, even when his fingers brushed my ear and sent a chill through me.
“It is, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the beauty in front of me,” he said, finally pulling his hand away. He stepped to the side, but kept his eyes on me.
My feet moved past him hesitantly. What just happened was far from anything I expected, and it left me feeling a little confused and maybe just the tiniest bit hopeful.
I sat my happy ass down at the table in the dining room bright and early the next morning. If he insisted on my being here to have a meal with him by eight, I’d do one better and be here at seven thirty. The table was already set when I took a seat. The room was as large and fancy as I’d expected, with large windows letting in the morning sun and
Sitting just in front of me was a plate of steaming bacon, eggs and even some pancakes with strawberry syrup next to it. I scooped up a few eggs and some slices of bacon and added them to my plate.
The door on the left opened, and Liam walked inside. He glanced at me but quickly turned his gaze to the food.
“Always a good spread of food in the morning,” he said and took a seat at the head of the table.
I didn’t say anything, hoping he’d just leave me be like he said he wanted in the first place, and ate a bite of eggs.
“You’re kind of quiet,” he said after a moment.
“I don’t have anything to say,” I said with a shrug.
“Nothing about the future?”
“It’s simple. You wanted a mate that was part of my pack to smooth relations. For whatever reason, you picked me, and here we are. It’s that simple,” I said and finally met his gaze.
He raised his eyebrows. “You listen well, but you do have certain obligations as a luna to the alpha.”
I waited for him to finish his thought and tell me what he thought I needed to know.
Liam continued. “We need a pup,” he said simply and took a bite of bacon.
My chest tightened at the thought. The idea of having sex with anyone but my future mate was hard to think about.
“You want to…” I let my words trail off.
He smirked. “I promise you won’t be disappointed.” He let a chuckle rumble through his chest. “One pup and then you can have the rest of your life to do what you want. I’ll bring in another to raise it if you like.”
I narrowed my gaze. “If I have a child, I’ll be taking care of them.”
“Good,” he said simply. “I hoped you would want to care for our pup. That was part of why I picked you.”
“Then why put the option of someone else doing it out there?”
He kept his eyes on me.
“You were testing me,” I finished, shaking my head. “If you want to know something, just ask. I don’t appreciate these games.”
He chuckled and took a bite of eggs. “I’ll do what I want to make sure you’re the right fit.”
“Maybe you should have done it before we ended up in this marriage,” I countered.
“That doesn’t matter. I can dissolve this mating for any reason at any time,” he said, taking a drink of his coffee. “Perks of being the alpha.”
I didn’t say anything, but he was right. All he had to do was say the word, and my world would completely change. I pushed away from the table and stood. “Thank you for breakfast. I would like to go to my room now.”
“Of course,” he said. “But remember what I said. We need to think about a pup.”
“I understand,” I said with a forced smile. The last thing I wanted was to do anything with him after he had just threatened to leave at any time, but I knew I didn’t have a choice.
Not unless I got him to decide I wasn’t worth it. That’s when I realized I had all the power and he didn’t even know it.
