“Sara, I have a plan, but I need your help for a few days,” I said to my bestie over the phone. I laid back on my bed and stared at the ceiling. “He can dissolve this marriage at any time.”
“Yeah, that’s pretty common. Alphas are important, so they need that kind of leeway,” she said. “So?”
“That means all I have to do is push him over the edge and then he will find another and I can be free to pursue Finn,” I said with a smile. “He will save face, my family will be protected and I’ll be free.”
“You really think that will work?” She seemed as if she didn’t believe me.
“Sara, this is my way out. He doesn’t want me. He wants a tie to the pack. I refuse to live in a loveless marriage,” I said.
She sighed, “Fine, I’ll help you.”
“Great. Come over tonight. I’ll let the house know you’re coming for a meeting with me. I doubt they will question it. Liam should be gone to a meeting most of the night,” I said, and for the first time since I’d been picked for this marriage, I didn’t feel dread.

“What do you mean, you want to change the office?” Sara crossed her arms and stood on the other side of the kitchen.
“Well, you know how alphas are about their space,” I said. “If I innocently mess with his office after I took the time to cook this meal-“
“- That smells like someone dumped spices into the atmosphere,” she interrupted.
“Right, but it all looks and seems like something a good wife would do, but annoy the crap out of a wolf.” I smiled brightly. This whole thing was going to be done in no time, and I’d be free.
“You’re just going to let this simmer on the stove, aren’t you?” She laughed slightly.
I nodded and motioned for her to follow me to the office. It was right across the hall from the kitchen, and the strong smell of basil and thyme filled my nose. It was right on the edge of too much, which was just perfect.
We worked for a couple of hours to move the huge desk to the other side of the room and took all of his books down from the shelves. We pulled the shelves over to where the desk was and placed the books back on the shelves. I may have moved them around a little just to be a bit frustrating.
“That should work,” I said, looking at our handiwork. The room looked completely different and a little weird. My decorating and furniture skills were not the best, and I knew it.
“I think this might be a bit much,” Sara said. “Is Finn worth it to you?”
“What are you talking about?” I furrowed my brows and walked back to the kitchen and took a seat at the small work table. “Of course he is.”
“Did you tell Liam about him?”
“Why would I tell him about Finn?” I sighed. “I haven’t even told Finn how I felt. Now I’m married and don’t want to be.”
“So, your plan is to torpedo this marriage and then tell Finn you want to be his mate?” She shook her head. “I doubt Liam would let you marry another after him.”
“It doesn’t matter. We’d leave.”
“Become rogue wolves?” She sighed. “That’s kind of extreme.”
“Sara, none of this was not my idea. I didn’t want to be married to Liam. I went to the meeting thinking this wouldn’t happen. I’ve always loved Finn and always will.”
“Who the hell is Finn?”
I froze at the voice of Liam, the alpha, behind me. Sara glanced at me and then at him.
“So sorry, Alpha Liam. I wanted to check on my friend.” Sara dropped her gaze.
I turned and looked up at his red, angry face and couldn’t help but smile. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.”
“Tell me who this Finn is?” He glanced past me and sniffed the air. “And what is that god awful smell?”
“Oh, I wanted to cook for you since we’re married now,” I said with a sweet smile.
“I don’t need you to cook for us. We have chiefs who can cook anything you might want,” he almost growled. “Put that shit away and meet me in the office.”
I waited until he had walked across the hall before I heard him cussing and throwing something across the room.
“Ariana, your friend needs to leave, and you get your ass in here now.” His anger laced his voice.
Sara hurried past me and gave me a look. “Hope it was worth it.”
After she made her way through the house and I heard her door close, I walked across the hallway and took a seat on the couch. He closed the door and stepped in front of me.
“I don’t know what you are trying to do, but it needs to stop. Now.” He leaned over me, and for a moment I was afraid I’d taken it too far. “This kind of bullshit is not going to make me want to stop this mating, and even if I do at some point, you will never be able to mate another male.”
I held his gaze and felt my stomach drop. The plan wouldn’t work. He would never let me go, even if the marriage ended.
“Now, who the fuck is Finn?”
“He’s the one I expected to mate,” I answered, my throat suddenly dry.
“I guess I need to find him a mate, then.” He didn’t move, and I held his gaze, narrowing my eyes. “That glare makes me happy. I think I’ve gotten my point across.” He pushed himself up and stayed standing over me, but at least he wasn’t leaning down like an angry giant.
“You don’t even want me,” I said. “Why do you care who I love or want?”
“Because you’re mine, and I’m the only wolf you will ever have.” He glanced at the door. “Get that shit off my stove and get ready for dinner. I expect you to look your best for me.”
I wanted to let myself cry, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction, so I pulled myself to my feet and walked to the kitchen, the door to his office slamming behind me. I jumped at the sound.
Everything was wrong, and now there was no way out. I couldn’t even convince him to dissolve the marriage without consequences. Now he was going to make sure Finn was mated by force. I hated it here. I hated him and I was stuck with him forever.
